This is getting out of control, and we need to do something: Remember: the administration wants you to think that 66,000 is nothing more than a number. But we know the truth. Those are 66,000 lives interrupted in the pursuit of a divisive, xenophobic agenda by political leaders that are supposed to represent us. That’s 66,000 families facing separation. 66,000 futures held hostage. 66,000 American dreams on the brink of destruction. That’s why every Sunday for nearly five months, our allies at the Workers Circle have organized vigils outside of Alligator Alcatraz―a secretive ICE “black site” detention camp in the Florida Everglades―and we can help them keep the vigils going. In order to grow the numbers and continue to build momentum, the Workers Circle is renting weekly buses to help people from across the state attend these vigils. But if they’re going to keep sending weekly buses, they need our help right now. Each bus costs $2,100 in rental fees, fuel, and accessibility needs. Our movement is committed to showing up, week after week, until this ICE black site is shut down. Each week they’re filling these buses, and $36 helps cover the cost of one seat. As our friends at Protecting Immigrant Families note, many of us are celebrating the holidays and I do not take for granted the opportunity to be near our loved ones―as we think of those who have had that opportunity stolen from them. I’m looking forward to spending time with my children during their DC Public Schools break, and haunted with the idea that this year ICE has sent more immigrant children into detention in federal shelters than in the previous four years combined.1 I am inspired by those who are showing up in solidarity. Please join us and support those efforts. In solidarity, Meredith Dodson 1 ICE Sent 600 Immigrant Kids to Detention in Federal Shelters This Year. It’s a New Record. -- DEBORAH'S EMAIL -- Last weekend the bus to Alligator Alcatraz was packed with activists―every single seat filled, the aisles buzzing with songs, signs, and determination: For five months now, our allies at the Workers Circle have been organizing a weekly vigil outside of the ICE black site detention camp known as Alligator Alcatraz, deep in the Florida Everglades. Week after week, everyday people, activists, and the families of detainees have come together, sung, prayed, shared stories―and made it clear that people are watching, that the families locked inside are not forgotten, and that “never again” means never again for anyone. And we’re not stopping until we have justice. To keep up the momentum, the Workers Circle has started renting buses each Sunday to help more people attend these weekly vigils. We need to keep this up again and again until we deliver the justice that our immigrant neighbors deserve. But we’re not just adding pressure on the ground. Alongside some of our powerful coalition allies, we’ve already sent more than 125,000 messages to members of Congress from across the country―sea to sea―demanding an end to these barbaric detention centers. These dark sites are meant to isolate and intimidate vulnerable people. The weekly buses do the opposite: they connect, they expose, and they organize. We’ll be honest with you here: Each bus costs $2,100 to cover the rental, the fees, and accessibility needs. But what our movement gets in return is priceless―face-to-face solidarity, media attention on a site ICE would rather keep hidden, and a growing network of people ready to fight for immigrant justice and everyone’s constitutional rights.
