BREAKING: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya violently beaten in Israeli prison

We’ve received a disturbing update from Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s legal team:

During a visit to Ofer prison, his lawyer reported that Dr. Abu Safiya and others were violently assaulted by Israeli prison officers last month. Dr. Abu Safiya was beaten for almost 30 minutes on his back, face, and neck. During the assault, his eyeglasses that were, recently provided following a request by his lawyer and after an extended delay were broken. His lawyer also shared that Dr. Abu Safiya showed signs of significant weight loss as the Israeli Prison Service continues to impose severe restrictions on Palestinian detainees’ access to food, adequate medical care and hygiene.

Dr. Abu Safiya is aware of our letter-writing campaign and the global attention his case is receiving. This awareness gives him strength and hope.

We must keep going with the public pressure. Every voice counts. Every letter matters.

👉 Please take action to demand Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release.

It’s been eight months since Dr. Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and the director of one of Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, was taken by Israeli forces in the middle of his workday.

Dr. Abu Safiya was the voice of Gaza’s decimated health sector, advocating for the protection of his hospital and continuing his lifesaving work under unsafe and inhumane conditions amid Israel’s genocide.

Even after the killing of his son last year by Israeli forces, he continued to come to work and treat children.

Right now, we are extremely concerned over his fate and wellbeing — and we urgently need your voice with us, continuing the public pressure on Israeli authorities to free him.

Tony, our campaigning to release Palestinians arbitrarily by Israeli forces HAS been successful in the past: when we campaigned for the release of surgeon Dr. Khaled Al Serr last year, we helped create the pressure to secure his freedom.

He told us:

For more than six months, I was almost completely cut off from the outside world, except for one visit by the lawyer in July. I worried about my family in Gaza; I worried about colleagues, but I also knew I was not alone. “While being interrogated, I learned that there was a campaign calling for my release. It gave me comfort and strength when I needed that so much.

Let's do the same for Dr. Abu Safiya.

With urgency and hope,

P.S. I’m sharing another photo of Dr. Abu Safiya below, from before he was taken. The lawyer representing him told us the public pressure is making a real difference — and that continuing to speak out is essential. Please, don’t let up. Send your letter today.
