People in Gaza are starving. Without urgent action from the United States to secure a permanent ceasefire, experts say the humanitarian disaster in Gaza could become “catastrophic.”
As the crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, we are seeing some positive momentum in Washington. A growing number of members of Congress are sounding the alarm and demanding a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is using the term “ceasefire” for the first time with Vice President Kamala Harris reiterating the White House’s calls for a temporary pause in violence for at least six weeks. This positive momentum is a testament to the power of our movement. Your advocacy is making a real impact. But we must persevere and demand action, not just words. While a pause in the violence would be a welcome step, a permanent ceasefire now will save tens of thousands of lives, secure the release of all hostages, and allow desperately needed aid to reach children and other civilians facing starvation and disease. The Israeli government is vowing to ramp up military operations in Rafah even if a deal for a temporary pause is reached. Rafah is the “last safe zone” in Gaza where more than 1.4 million displaced Palestinians have sought refuge. There is nowhere left for them to go -- and time is running out.
