FLORIDA WATCH: Book bans, permission slips, what’s next?

Florida Watch

Banning dictionaries, encyclopedias, and now permission slips are required to participate in Black History Month activities in schools. This is the vision of Florida Republicans for our state.

Tampa Bay Times: Florida Republicans propose tax cuts for utilities but not homeowners — Neglecting to provide tax relief to Florida consumers while freely giving such relief to large corporations is a missed opportunity to help families and small businesses who are also struggling.

This is the Florida that Ron DeSantis and his Florida GOP supermajority wanted all along. It has a chilling effect on teachers, students, and parents.

This isn’t what parents want — they want their children to get the best education. Not have dictionaries and encyclopedias removed from their library or have to sign a permission slip to participate in Black History Month events.

Schools across the state are trying to avoid breaking the law thanks to the raft of legislation and rules enacted by Ron DeSantis and Florida Republicans in the Legislature over the last several years. They banned the Advanced Placement African American Studies class, prohibited the mention of gender identity and sexual orientation through the end of high school, and forced students to be taught that Black people somehow personally benefited from slavery.

It’s no surprise that school districts are on edge as they receive more and more book complaints, with some individuals filing objections on hundreds of books. Some districts have even proactively reviewed their books, which ended up with dictionaries and encyclopedias being removed from library shelves.

This is not what the freedom to get a high-quality education looks like. Now, please sign our petition to demand Florida Republicans end their assault on books, parents, teachers, and students.

From Pensacola to the Keys, all students in Florida deserve a high-quality education. Now, we need to tell Florida Republicans that doesn’t mean book bans, permission slips for Black History Month events, and forcing students to be taught that Black people benefited from slavery.

Florida Republicans need an education on education, and we hope you’ll help us teach them.

Now is the time to address the real issues facing the people of Florida — lowering costs, raising wages, protecting reproductive freedom, and building an affordable future for all of us — but we can’t do that as long as the Florida GOP is holding us back.

The support we provide to Democratic candidates in flippable seats across the state has already been proven effective. so please pitch in what you can right now to provide the resources we need to help break the GOP supermajority and take back our state.

We’re fighting to ensure all Floridians have the freedom to be healthy, prosperous, and safe. It’s a fight we must win, and any support you can provide will help us support Democrats in close, can’t-lose races across our state.
