Antibiotics are known for their ability to fight dangerous and potentially deadly bacterial infections, but these lifesaving drugs aren’t just important tools in doctor’s offices and other health care settings; they’re also vital to our country’s national security.
History has shown that bacterial threats such as anthrax, plague, and other diseases are easily weaponized. Late last year, the Biden administration advised that the risks from a deliberate attack with bioweapons are expanding. The antibiotics that could keep us safe from such an attack are also essential to protecting and treating members of the military and civilians in war zones who have suffered combat injuries.
Despite the critical role of antibiotics in national security readiness and response, there are not enough of these essential drugs being developed. However, Congress can take steps today to protect the U.S. by passing the bipartisan PASTEUR Act, which would jump-start the innovation of urgently needed new antibiotics.
Please join us in urging Congress to pass this imperative piece of legislation this year to address the growing threat that antibiotic resistance poses to the nation’s health and security.
