Uvalde.

Greg Casar for Congress

One year ago today, the community of Uvalde was rocked by the deadliest shooting at a Texas public school in the history of our state.

19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School were gunned down by a shooter armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, the same weapon of war used in countless mass shootings every year in our country.

It was a devastating day for our state and our nation. Our schools are supposed to be safe havens for children to learn and grow—not a place parents fear sending their children each day.

One year later, the Uvalde community remains in grief—but also feels a deep sense of anger and frustration that their elected leaders have failed to act in their name.

Camille Phillips - Texas Public Radio

Uvalde parents and community members have marched in the streets of San Antonio, Austin, and Washington, D.C. demanding that their lawmakers in the Texas Legislature and Congress pass gun violence legislation – such as a ban on the assault-style weapons used in Uvalde, or at minimum, other strong safety legislation.

Instead, all they’ve gotten from right wing officials were debates about “door safety” and bills to add even more guns to our public schools. Just like every other mass shooting, Republican lawmakers continued to parrot the words of the NRA and gun manufacturers—and refused to put the most basic gun safety legislation up for a vote. It’s shameful.

But we aren’t giving up. I’ll continue to fight everyday alongside my colleagues to pass legislation to tackle the gun violence epidemic. Things like an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, red flag laws, and closing gun loopholes – these are common sense, broadly popular solutions to reduce gun violence that we could pass today if Republicans didn’t stand in the way.

Today, on the one-year anniversary of this horrific tragedy, I’ll be thinking about the families and friends of the 21 victims lost in Uvalde below. And I’ll continue to raise their voices as we fight for reforms in their memory:
