As we go into the next phase of the political climate, we would like to state one of our main goals with our work: the depolarization of American politics. I’m sure you have heard that phrase more than once and most certainly used in vain, but we really do want to try and shift the conversation.
That being said, we are aware that this toxic climate has been encouraged by those deeply invested in the MAGA-identity because it is rooted in the notion of “us versus them,” while EXCLUDING the fact that we are all Americans, and we should all want what is best for each other and our country.
Politics was, not so long ago, rooted in discussions on POLICY, not identity. Some people were more conservative while others were more progressive. But that made room for many opinions and ideas to be brought to the table – giving many voices as backgrounds a place to have their voices heard. And while we’ve made great strides in making a more representative government: with people of color, women, and those of the LGBTQIA plus community winning seats…we’ve also taken many steps back.
We now find ourselves in a deep tribal mindset, where the (D) or (R) next to a representative’s name means that they simply won’t hear the other side, and this is a detriment to the American people. We cannot have a functioning government when one side deems the other wrong all of the time and just votes along party lines. It doesn’t make sense – the majority of us live much more nuanced lives than simply being a part of one party or another.
The death of that nuance in our politics has made us fearful and angry towards one another, while never realizing that we have more in common than we give each other credit for – and THAT is what our elected officials should be fighting about, how to make sure they deliver to us as a nation.
Most of us worry about the same things – which bills to pay when the paycheck comes in, where to get the best deals on groceries, and how to best lead our lives in service of our loved ones…we’re all very similar at our core; we just have different ideas on how to execute that in the best way.
Even our fears about “the other” come from a place in which we calculate who is the biggest “threat” to our way of life.
But the true nature of us as a country, and us as a part of the human race, is that we are all very flawed and different, but very similar in our cause. We all want a better life and better ways to obtain it – and that is what we should be fighting for, not against, each other. |
