In our work, there are very few issues we can boil down as simply as this one: Members of Congress (and their spouses or dependent children) shouldn’t be allowed to buy, own or trade stocks while in office. With the power to move markets in their hands, there shouldn’t be any opportunities for our elected representatives to profit from the decisions they make at work. I think it’s a more than fair ask, given the trust we put in them. And most Americans agree. But just how much of a no-brainer is this issue? We’ve pulled together a quiz to test what you know about congressional stock trading and ownership and why it should be banned. Here’s a preview: Which member of Congress said: “We are a free-market economy. [Members of Congress] should be able to participate in that.” Think you know the answer? Let us know how you do! P.S. If you like a challenge as much as I do, be sure to follow POGO on Twitter and Instagram, where I share quizzes often. Emma Coghlan Social Media Editor Project On Government Oversight |
