Dear Friend,
The dense worldwide transportation network constructed by humans is now powering so-called variants (mutations) of COVID-19 across the world from their countries of origin. The British variant (called B.1.1.7), the Brazilian variant (called P.1) and the South African variant (called B.1.351) are all racing across the globe. This shouldn’t be surprising since all three are thought to be more contagious than the original virus.

Banality of Evil in Neo-fascist Times
by Yanis Iqbal
We live in dangerous times. Neo-fascism is on the rise in many parts of the world, combining the savagery of the market with authoritarian forms of xenophobia. The combinatorial power of individualizing cultural conformism and totalizing statism has resulted in a new “culture of silence”, intended to reduce citizens to passive spectators of the misery
and suffering inflicted on others. In a politico-cultural conjuncture like this, a re-examination of Hanna Arendt’s concept of “banality of evil” may prove to be useful.
When Glaring Crimes Against Humanity Go Unpunished, This May Pave the Way For Even Worse To Come
by Bharat Dogra
To give just one example let us consider the case of Henry Kissinger who dominated USA foreign policy during 1969 to 1977 in the Presidential administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He was appointed National Security Advisor in 1969 and Secretary of State in 1973. It has been widely documented since then that he played a very important role, likely to be a crucial and decisive role, in initiating and supporting in a big way anti-democratic, illegal, violent, catastrophic actions and activities in several nations which resulted in deaths of a very large
number of people, including democratically elected, highly popular national leaders like Allende in Chile and Mujibur in Bangladsh.
The IITs, Scheduled Category reservation and the strategic excuse of excellence
by Sthabir Khora
A Ministry of Education (MoE) panel has recommended that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) should be exempted from caste-based reservations in faculty appointments[1]. Out of the many categories of reservation in practice in India[2], it is only the scheduled category reservation (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Classes) that becomes a special target of attack and vilification. This is done using a self-serving definition of excellence. This article holds the view that this flows from a combination of casteism and scientism rather than concern for excellence.

Cannot be Told Officially
by Bharat Dogra
When Banglabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rehman , the first President of Bangladesh, also called the Father of the Nation and revered by millions as such, was assassinated on August 15, 1975 as a part of the wider efforts to overthrow his popular government, there were some additional aspects of this murder most foul which shocked the world.
Fr Stan Swamy and the Ides of March
by Cedric Prakash
Sometime, just before Monday 22 March (the day the order in response to his bail application was scheduled to be pronounced), Fr. Stan Swamy sent a communication from the confines of the Taloja Prison where he has been incarcerated for near six months now. In that communication he said, “So, we await ‘the ides of March’”

Koran, Madrassas and Terrorism: Wasim Rizvi’s motivated Understanding of Islam
by Dr Ram Puniyani
Wasim Rizvi, the ex Chairman of Shia Waqf Board has filed a PIL in Supreme Court. It states that 26 verses of Islam should be deleted as they promote terrorism. He also says that Madrassas are giving the training for terrorism and if not stooped India will witness a huge rise in terror acts. He is also the one who has made derogatory films against Sunni belief and practices apart from saying that Muslims are reproducing like animals. As far as terrorism in India is concerned Minister of Home, Krishna Reddy had stated that the sources of terror acts are not in this country.
A Rejoinder to Chetan Bhagat’s Neoliberal Prescriptions
by Yanis Iqbal
Bhagat’s article is reflective of the neoliberal consensus prevalent all over the world. This consensus is anti-democratic in its essence, using highly warped ideas to justify the marketization of the entire society. While subscribing to this neoliberal tradition, Bhagat is distinctive in the sense that he combines a high degree of unabashed elitism with unfathomable proclivity for grotesquely crafted judgments and suggestions. His frank acknowledgement of the resistance and protests his suggestions would face when enacted is different from the sophisticated and glib talk of neoliberal ideologues. That is why it represents the apogee of neoliberal stupidity.
