Last October, as part of Spotlight's "Standards of Care" series, reporters Liz Kowalczyk and Elizabeth Koh dove deeply into the horrifying case of Dr. Derrick Todd, a once-prominent rheumatologist now accused of sexually assaulting more than 270 patients during exams.

The question our reporting raised was a troubling one: Why did it take so long for medical oversight officials to act? Our story showed that at least 23 patients said they were assaulted by Todd during the time he was under investigation. (That number has now risen to at least 25.) Had Todd simply been suspended while those allegations were explored, all of that alleged abuse might have been prevented.

Our findings were published a few months after prosecutors in Middlesex County charged Todd with raping two women during exams.

This week, Suffolk County prosecutors unveiled a raft of additional sexual assault indictments — allegations that, taken together, make the case against Todd the most significant sex-crime prosecution against a doctor accused of abusing patients that Massachusetts has ever seen. Between the two counties, Todd now faces more than 100 sex-crime charges involving about three dozen women. Here's that story

It could be a year or longer before Todd's case is resolved. Meanwhile, the central question our series raised remains an urgent one: Is the state's Board of Registration in Medicine doing enough to protect patients from doctor harm?  If you want to look up your doctor's record, we built a handy tool for it.

A Suffolk County grand jury has indicted Dr. Derrick Todd on more than 80 new sexual assault charges involving nearly two dozen patients, in what is believed to be the largest such case ever brought against a doctor in Massachusetts.

Todd, a rheumatologist who worked at two Brigham and Women’s hospitals in Boston and a physician practice in Framingham, already faces 22 counts of rape and indecent assault and battery in Middlesex County. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

But the expansive new indictments represent a dramatic escalation of the case against Todd. Suffolk County prosecutors have charged him with 21 additional counts of rape, one count of assault with intent to rape, and 59 counts of indecent assault and battery. Rape is punishable by up to life in prison, prosecutors said.
