After asking you to do a lot of intense reading this week, we’re taking tonight off. It’s also the first night of Passover—Chag Sameach to those who celebrate—so this will let me devote a little more time to my brisket and to playing with the wind-up matzah balls toys that walk across the table on their little feet when you put them down.
In case you missed them earlier this week, this is a good night to go back and read:
Last night’s edition of Five Questions with Olivia Troye, where she explains Trump’s executive orders that target two of his own former employees, Chris Krebs and Miles Taylor, and what it means to have a president who uses the power of his office to exact personal revenge on people for telling the truth. I’ve taken the paywall off of this piece, because I think it’s important for everyone to have access to Olivia’s explanation of what this means.
An explanation of the Supreme Court’s decision in the deportation case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. I ended that piece with these words: “The Supreme Court—just barely—got it right today. But the danger is far from past. If a person can be swept up and sent to a third country with no right to first argue in court that the government has no right to do that to them, then American citizens or not, we are all vulnerable. It’s as much a danger to you and me as it is to them. This case, and this weak ruling that doesn’t firmly tell the government “No!” is not where it ends. This is where it begins. That means it could get much, much worse as this administration continues.” Unfortunately, they seem to be on target. An update on the district court’s response to the Supreme Court order is here. (Shortly after the court ordered 5:00 pm deadline Saturday, the government filed a declaration from a State Department official, advising that Abrego Garcia was alive and in El Salvador’s custody. The closing line, “He is detained pursuant to the sovereign, domestic authority of El Salvador,” is disingenuous under the circumstances. Expect much more about this in the coming week.)
Or, watch my conversation with Marc Elias about the North Carolina Supreme Court, the SAVE Act, and so much more, which you can watch if you missed it live.
Have a good weekend and do whatever it takes to recharge your batteries!
We’re in this together,
Joyce
