Sheryl Crow

A Reason To Smile

Sheryl Crow has always been a favorite. Country, pop, or rock, the nine-time Grammy winner’s music brings a smile. But it was what she did offstage last week that caught our attention. She made a very public display of selling her Tesla to protest the car maker’s owner, Elon Musk. You might call it her act of defiance against DOGE.

On Instagram, Crow posted a video of the car being driven away on a flatbed, which so far has gotten more than a quarter of a million likes. She wrote in the post, “My parents always said… you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla.”

In a grin-causing twist, Crow donated the proceeds of the sale to National Public Radio. NPR and PBS, which receive a small percentage of their funding from the federal government, are “under threat by President Musk,” as she described it.

The genre-spanning singer-songwriter got her start as a backup singer for Michael Jackson. Take a listen to one of Crow’s most popular recordings, “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” a song written in 1967 by Cat Stevens. It became a hit for Crow back in 2003.

Crow has never been shy about her politics. But think about what her actions say. When things are looking bleak, small acts of defiance can make a big difference. You don’t have to sell your car, but, love it or hate it, there’s lots of social media that can help you amplify exactly how you feel.
