This week’s reason to smile should make you laugh, too. It was 48 years ago this week that legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon hosted “Saturday Night Live,” which was then in its second season. His opening monologue was unconventional — and oh so memorable.
Simon begrudgingly dressed as a turkey, a nod to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. He then sang his hit song “Still Crazy After All These Years.” Or at least part of it.
The man Simon argues with as he exits the stage is “Saturday Night Live” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels.
If you want to hear the whole song, sans poultry costume, here you go:
“Still Crazy After All These Years” was the title track and arguably the best song from Simon’s fourth solo album. Simon got his start with elementary school friend Art Garfunkel. The folk duo were among the best selling artists of the 1960s, famous for their beautiful harmonies and poignant lyrics. Though Simon retired from touring in 2018 at the age of 77, he is still making music.
A reminder: We created a Spotify playlist of all the songs featured in A Reason to Smile posts. Click here to listen to it. We will update the list every week. A tip of the Stetson to Steady subscriber DKS who recreated the playlist on Apple Music. If you prefer to listen on Apple Music, click here.
No matter how you subscribe, I thank you for reading and listening.
Stay Steady and Happy Thanksgiving,
Dan
