Ruby Bridges

Nikema for Congress

On this day in 1960, Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend a newly desegregated school in Louisiana. Ruby had to be escorted by U.S. marshalls out of concern for her safety and well-being. Today, we remember her strength and dedication to civil rights in education. Her current work and legacy continue through the Ruby Bridges Foundation, where she helps to lead youth in their fight for an anti-racist future.

Since Ruby became the first Black child to attend a desegregated school in 1960, we’ve made tremendous strides in our education. We have protections in place for our most vulnerable students, have initiated free lunch programs and food assistance, invested in after-school programs, and so much more.

Unfortunately, with the new Trump administration coming in, all of this, and more, is at risk.

Donald Trump has pledged to close down the Department of Education. And while it’s easier said than done, no possibility is too bizarre now that he’s officially the future President. Even if he doesn’t close it down, he has the power to make significant changes that could impact Americans across the country.

Here’s what we may be facing:
  • A Secretary of Education with little to no experience or knowledge
  • The gutting of assistance for incoming college students who are low-income, such as Pell grants
  • Resources to support students with disabilities through age 21 completely disappearing
  • A lack of enforcement of national civil rights protections for students
By demanding to protect and invest in public education, we can ensure that Ruby Bridges’ legacy—of fighting for equal access to education—remains intact for generations to come.

It’s on us to make sure that the progress we've fought for is not undone. Sign our petition and demand the protection of the Department of Education.
In solidarity,
Team Nikema
