Democrats Celebrate in Chicago, While Republicans Lose in Court

Preview of my members-only emails

Republicans had a very bad week. The Democratic National Convention was an unqualified success filled with inspiring speeches, blockbuster entertainers, and genuine enthusiasm and party unity. All of this built to a crescendo on Thursday night when Kamala Harris took to the podium and delivered one of the most inspiring and memorable convention addresses in recent memory.

Trump’s woes were compounded by sagging polls and a vice presidential pick who couldn’t even manage a donut order without being humiliated. As Donald Trump was being skewered nightly from the podium, his efforts at counterprogramming were a complete failure. In a final insult to the failed one-term president, the ratings showed far greater interest in the Democratic convention than his own.

Democrats’ excitement and joy in Chicago, overshadowed another reason for despair within the flailing GOP: Republicans and their allies lost a series of critical court cases in the last week.

So, sit back and pour yourself a tall glass of Republican tears.

The damage to the GOP began when it lost its challenge to New York’s vote by mail law. This was no fringe lawsuit. The plaintiffs included the RNC, its House campaign arm and Rep. Elise Stefanik. Striking down this law was seen as critical to the GOP’s chances of holding several U.S. House districts this November. Not only did the New York Court of Appeals reject the anti-voting lawsuit, but in a 6-1 decision it vastly exploded the ability of the Democratic-controlled legislature to expand voting even further in the future.
