BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island attorney has moved across state lines to challenge U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren this fall.
Republican John Deaton, a 56-year-old who is originally from Detroit, launched his campaign on Tuesday. He put his Barrington home on the market this week for $2.5 million, and Politico reports he is now renting a home in Swansea.
“Washington, D.C., is broken, and in more than a decade in office Elizabeth Warren has done nothing to fix it – in fact, she’s become a big part of the problem,” Deaton said in a statement Tuesday after releasing a campaign launch video.
State records show Deaton was on the Rhode Island voter rolls as an independent before his registration was cancelled Feb. 14 due to his change of residency. He is listed as having voted only three times since registering in Rhode Island two decades ago, casting ballots in the 2020, 2008 and 2004 general elections.
Deaton faces long odds in Massachusetts, where voters haven’t elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since Scott Brown’s shock victory in the 2010 special election to replace Ted Kennedy. The last time a Bay State Republican won a general election for Senate was 1972.
Warren, who unseated Brown in 2012, has gained a national following among progressives during her time in the Senate, though she lost the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination to Joe Biden.
While Warren’s job approval rating has always been relatively soft considering Democrats’ heavy advantage in Massachusetts, she has nearly $4 million in her campaign account and is heavily favored by national forecasters to win another term.
“Senator Warren is taking nothing for granted,” a spokesperson said. “She has a strong record of delivering for working families and continues to fight hard for the people of Massachusetts.”
Deaton has been in the news locally before.
THERE IS A FOLLOWUP ARTICLE REGARDING THIS ISSUE:
In 2017, the retailer Claire’s was forced to pull some children’s makeup off its shelves after Target 12 reported that tests ordered by Deaton’s law firm discovered asbestos in the products. He later raised concerns about the FDA’s lack of authority over cosmetics.
Separately, Deaton had a yearslong fight with Barrington officials over his 2017 arrest during an altercation with his girlfriend’s ex-husband. He has since sued the town in federal court, alleging police acted unlawfully. That suit remains in active in both state court and federal appeals court, according to Barrington Town Manager Philip Hervey.
