DEADLINE TONIGHT: Tell the Office of Government Ethics that America deserves better than optional government ethics! The Office of Government Ethics (OGE) has issued a draft regulation to place limits on officials accepting large gifts of cash from individuals who may be seeking to influence policy. However, an exception in the draft regulation would make compliance with this new regulation optional. We cannot hold government officials accountable for unethical practices if they can opt out. Tell OGE to fix its regulation and close all the nonsensical loopholes. This isn’t the only problem with OGE’s regulation: The optional regulation would require officials to recuse themselves from certain assignments involving individuals who have given them gifts of cash. However, officials could decide not to recuse at all if, in their opinion, the public wouldn’t worry about their working on assignments involving donors. Regulations that contradict themselves may as well not exist. We need to let OGE know that we, the public, are worried, and that these elective ethics will not fly. Send an email now and tell OGE to say no to optional government ethics.
