Today’s Action: Boost support for caregivers in Biden’s recovery plan!
Ask any parent and they’ll tell you: this pandemic has not been easy. Ditto for adult caretakers of seniors. Even more so for the nearly 10 million American adults who care for both their children AND senior parents at the same time.
And the majority of caregivers – for children and adults alike – are women, which has led to nearly 3 million women leaving the workforce in the past year (the lowest participation rate in 33 years.) It could take decades for women to bounce back from this historic set-back...or it could happen a lot faster with good, progressive legislation.
President Biden’s recovery plan addresses these struggles in caregiving holistically, by investing $400 billion into the care economy to cover the costs of aging at home, make childcare affordable, and provide additional tax credits for caretakers – a fantastic start. Let’s make it even better.
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand increased funding for the care economy in Biden’s recovery plan - don’t stop at $400 billion! Raise the budget to $450 billion and ensure the following priorities:
- $15/hour for caregiver jobs and the ability to unionize
- Investments in childcare facilities and training for workers
- Universal childcare without work requirements or other access barriers
- Permanent paid family and medical leave
- Access to caregiving resources for low-income communities
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to commit at least $450 billion to caregiving investments in Biden’s recovery plan, and highlight 2-3 priorities from the list above!
