We must stop intimate partner violence during the COVID era.

In 2020, firearm-related background checks have nearly doubled since the same time last year – and we’ve seen a rise in gun violence as well.
Coronavirus lockdowns and sharp increases in gun purchases have created a dangerous situation: people are trapped at home with abusers who have access to firearms – and that increases the likelihood of intimate partner violence that disproportionately impacts women of color.

A recent study found reported incidents of domestic violence spiked in the beginning of shelter-at-home orders and then gradually dropped off. The study strongly associated a 12.5% increase in domestic violence incidents with shelter-at-home orders.
As COVID-19 cases rise and states halt their reopening plans, there are two things you can do today to help stop domestic violence:
1. Sign our petition calling on Congress to immediately enact safety laws that keep guns out of abusers’ hands and to pass the HEROES Act, which provides additional domestic violence program funding during the pandemic.
2. Share the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) hotline with anyone you know that is currently in a dangerous situation.
Thank you for doing your part to protect victims of intimate partner violence.
