Hello and good Thursday evening. Today’s American News is your source of news and analysis for the circus that is American politics and entertainment. Our thoughts continue to be with the people of California and everyone battling forces of Mother Nature.

Supreme Court blocks Trump’s bid to block tomorrow sentencing… The almost always bought-and-paid-for U.S. Supreme Court handed their master Donald Trump a rare defeat today. Justices rejected by a 5-4 margin his emergency request to block the convicted felon’s sentencing to take place tomorrow. The move by the court is the latest in a string of legal defeats in his p*rn star hush money case that led to 34 felony convictions by a New York jury of his peers. Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump-appointed Justice Amy Coney Barrett sided with the court’s three liberals in denying the bid from Trump’s legal team. We’re shocked.

President Biden steps up efforts to combat California wildfires… Joe Biden remains president for eleven more days, and he’s using his remaining time wisely. Hours after attending President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, Biden spoke of the horrific wildfires ravaging Southern California. "I want to underscore I told the governor and local officials spare no expense to do what they need to do and contain these fires," Biden said, referring to a request from California Governor Gavin Newsom for the federal government to boost its aid for firefighting efforts. Command of key Europe defenses shifting as Trump presidency looms… European leaders have plenty of reason to be weary of Trump’s second term in office, from his comments about seizing Greenland from confederation with Denmark to his mixed messages on the war on Ukraine. He has called out Putin for being weak while falsely claiming Biden is responsible for the conflict on account of his support for Ukraine’s NATO bid. His appointments to top national security posts have been a mixed bag on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, with General Keith Kellog as special envoy being a defender of Ukraine and Tulsi Gabbard as intel chief being a mouthpiece of Kremlin propaganda.

Jimmy Carter’s funeral brings four former Presidents together…. In a rare scene, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, along with current President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, gathered at the Washington National Cathedral to honor Jimmy Carter’s life. Tensions were not exactly low between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, who didn’t acknowledge each other, although Trump kept (creepily) eyeing at Harris throughout the service. George W. Bush snubbed the Trumps as he walked by them but made sure to give Barack Obama a friendly tap on the chest to say hello. Former Second Lady Karen Pence also avoided greeting Donald and Melania Trump, remaining seated while her husband, Mike Pence, shook hands with them. We can’t blame her.

NPR highlights how Americans are helping one another amid winter storms… In the Trump era, America often seems divided beyond repair and so mean-spirited in certain elements of society that we need stories reminding us that people are good. Enter NPR, with three stories on its homepage doing just that. First, a story out of Evansville, Indiana about Jeep drivers whose work day was canceled giving free rides to essential workers like nurses. Then a story out of Washington, D.C. profiling how a homeless shelter is stepping up its efforts to be of service during the unusually strong storm for the city. A third article cites experts on what ordinary Americans can do to keep themselves and each other safe from the storms.

Today’s Buzz

Calls emerge to nix award shows in favor of funds for wildfire victims… Actress Jean Smart, who won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, is not interested in more commendations this award season. Given the raging wildfires in Southern California, she wants money that would go to the award shows to be given to victims of the horrific natural disaster and the firefighters risking their lives. What do you think? We happen to think the networks could continue to carry the award shows but that Hollywood should use the airtime to raise needed resources for the cause.

Today’s Furry Friend

Meet Nibi, the baby beaver who won a legal battle so her human rescuers could continue caring for her until she’s ready for the wild.

And there you have it for Thursday. Tune back in tomorrow evening for more news and analysis from Today’s American News.
