Donald Trump nominated Russell Vought, one of the authors of Project 2025, to lead the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) — and he got a confirmation hearing yesterday. Here’s why Vought is a terrible choice for Trump’s Cabinet: As one of the authors of Project 2025, a set of far-right policy proposals designed to entrench autocracy, Vought articulated a radical opposition to regulations that protect consumers, workers, the environment, and public health and safety He has also proposed slashing funding for critical government agencies and services, claiming that funding for the Environmental Protection Agency should be “shut down” so that the agency “can’t do all of the rules against our energy industry” And he even proposed terminating career civil service employees for simply doing their jobs, saying “we want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected” and to “not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains”
Russell Vought got a confirmation hearing yesterday, so your senators will soon make up their minds about him. There’s no time to waste — please contact your senators right away and urge them to oppose Vought’s confirmation >> Vought’s proposals would be bad enough on their own. But since he led OMB near the end of Trump’s first term, we have a good indication of the sorts of things he could do if the Senate confirms him to lead it again. During Vought’s previous tenure, OMB abused its power by: Weakening a rule from the EPA to limit toxic “forever chemicals” Preventing EPA career staffers from making their concerns about weakening fuel efficiency standards public Blocking disaster funds appropriated by Congress to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria And halting the release of COVID guidance from the CDC
These abuses, which have been revealed by inspector general investigations, show just how dangerous it would be for Vought to be confirmed. Send a message to your senators. Tell them: Russell Vought has extreme views and a track record of abuses of power under his watch. He is not fit to lead the Office of Management and Budget.
