Alabama voter suppression law will be blocked for election

  • In a win for voters, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that an Alabama law severely limiting who can help voters with disabilities cast absentee ballots will remain blocked for elections this year. The provisions are not in effect.

  • Last month, an Alabama judge partially blocked it for the 2024 election, and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall (R) appealed the decision to the 11th Circuit. Litigation is ongoing.

Republicans in Georgia county appeal voting machine case

  • The DeKalb County Republican Party appealed a ruling rejecting its challenge to Georgia's use of voting machines to the state Supreme Court. Last week, a judge held that the security concerns the case raises about Dominion Voting Systems are "purely hypothetical."

  • Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) called the lawsuit a “last-minute effort to push false claims about Georgia’s voting system and cast doubt on the upcoming presidential election.”

  • According to Democracy Docket’s case database, 18 anti-voting lawsuits have been filed in Arizona, 15 were filed in Pennsylvania and 11 were filed in Nevada during this election cycle.

  • These cases were brought by a variety of actors, like former President Donald Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee, right-wing groups and state Republican parties.

New Defending Democracy podcast episode out now

  • In 2016, George Conway considered a position in the Trump Administration. But he ultimately declined, stating it was a "dumpster fire." In a new episode of Defending Democracy, he said that not taking the job was “one of the best decisions I’d ever made.”

  • Conway joins Marc this week to discuss how he's trying to keep Trump out of office and what the future of the GOP looks like. Watch it on YouTube and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
