Massachusetts on Thursday reported 2,106 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 9 deaths in the week from August 25-31.

The state also reported that 2.6 percent of all total hospitalizations during that timeframe in Massachusetts were related to COVID-19, meaning 368 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, and that the seven-day percent positivity was 13.86 percent.

On Oct. 5, the state released its new respiratory illness dashboard, combining COVID-19 data with data on flu and RSV.

As of April 1, 2023, the state has changed its classification of COVID-19 deaths. Deaths recorded before that date were classified as COVID-19 deaths if a person had COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate or if a person had a COVID diagnosis within 30 days even if they did not have COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate.

All deaths recorded after April 1, 2023, must have COVID-19 listed as a cause of death on a death certificate to be classified by the state as a COVID-19 death.

The following derive from data included in the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s weekly coronavirus public health dashboard.

Historical data:

As of Oct. 5, the Mass. Department of Public Health no longer reports COVID-19 infections and deaths by day. DPH also changed its reporting of hospitalizations to record hospital admissions for COVID-19 as a percentage of all hospital visits. Below are historical charts, which are no longer being updated.
