Right now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is waging a devastating war in Gaza, while undermining diplomacy and ignoring calls and protests from thousands of Israelis, including hostages’ families, to accept a ceasefire that can end the violence, bring their loved ones home, and build true security.
None of this is a one-off. PM Netanyahu has built a career on impunity and sabotaging peace processes. His current resume includes everything from domestic corruption charges to overseeing efforts to manipulate U.S. public opinion to accusations of empowering Hamas to weaken a two-state solution.
Despite all this, House Speaker Mike Johnson — with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in tow — invited PM Netanyahu to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress next month. No matter your politics, one thing is clear: Granting PM Netanyahu a congressional platform will come at the expense of peace.
Nothing will change if leaders who continuously choose violence over peace are given huge megaphones and political cover, especially by the U.S. government. That’s why we’re working fast to pile on the pressure to urge members of Congress to RSVP ‘No’.
ACT NOW |
If members of Congress show up to this speech in full force, it will send a distressing signal the U.S. government approves of Netanyahu’s most egregious actions. It’d be as dangerous as it is misguided. That’s why we’re launching a multi-pronged effort to push back — and you speaking out today is a critical piece of the plan.
Let’s be clear: PM Netanyahu is a corrupt politician desperately trying to hold on to power.
To do it, he has waged a catastrophic war in Gaza, resulting in needless suffering and death. Right now, families are at risk of starving to death amidst a famine his government created. Late last month, the International Criminal Court announced they were seeking warrants for these and other apparent war crimes.
A speech before Congress opens the U.S. public — and the entire whole world — to a cynical bit of pro-war politicking that Netanyahu has tried multiple times before. Not even 10 years ago, Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress in a blatant attempt to undermine another Democratic President and Obama’s signature diplomatic achievement, the Iran nuclear deal.
We saw through that attempt to sow division then too, along with 58 members of Congress, joined by then-VP Biden, who took a crucial stand for diplomacy by skipping the 2015 speech. Today's circumstances demand nothing less than the same moral courage, and we’re already hearing that dozens of members are showing up. You can help push more of them to act:
Inviting PM Netanyahu to speak before Congress is a misguided attempt to score political points. This is a moment about leadership.
Will members choose to push for hostages to come home, to save thousands of children in Gaza from starvation, and for families in Palestine to be safe from indiscriminate bombs, or will they empower a corrupt leader who chooses to exacerbate this horrific cycle of violence at every turn?
The choice should be an easy one.
Thank you for working for peace,
