I was lucky enough to be given a chance

My name is Kemba Smith Pradia, and I am a wife, mother, advocate, consultant, and author. I am now also the executive producer of a film inspired by my life: Kemba.

As a college student, I began a relationship with a man, only to learn he was a drug kingpin. He led me down a path of abuse and manipulation, placing me in the middle of the government’s “war on drugs,” and ultimately landing me in federal prison.

At the age of 23, I found myself standing in a courtroom while 7 months pregnant. I received a 24.5 year prison sentence for conspiracy to distribute, despite knowing full well that I never handled the drugs myself. I have often been called the “poster child” for a disturbing trend in the rise in lengthy sentences for first-time non-violent offenders.

After serving over 6 years, my sentence was commuted by President Clinton in 2000. This is where my situation becomes uncommon. Despite my history not being taken into account during my trial, it was a big part of the fight for my freedom. I’m so grateful to my parents and the Legal Defense Fund for fighting for me while I was incarcerated.

I was cast aside to make an example, now in my freedom, I’m working to liberate the thousands of women whose stories are so similar to mine, because I truly believe this work is bigger than me.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with incredible producers, director, cast and film team to help make Kemba, a film about my life. I’m excited as a part of my film’s impact campaign, to partner with Represent Justice to address the justice system’s impact on young women of color and highlighting the harms caused by extreme sentencing. Join us in mobilizing audiences across the country to participate in the movement advocating for sentencing reform.

So this week, check out Kemba on BET Plus and share it with your loved ones! And stay tuned for the cable broadcast premiere on BET in the coming weeks.

With Love,
Kemba Smith Pradia
