258 new COVID-19 cases, four deaths reported on Cape and Islands, in weekly state report

 There were 7,318 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number of cases to 1,909,721 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.     

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 1,095 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 176,917.     

As of Oct. 25, 239 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 764 total patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the state agency reported.   

Sixty-one patients were in intensive care units, or ICUs, and 23 patients were intubated.    

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, state health officials said Barnstable County posted 243 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 45,356 since the pandemic started. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) reported six new coronavirus cases, for a to-date total of 4,194. Nantucket County reported nine new cases as well, for a total of 3,766.    

Case numbers are lower than last week’s report, which showed 311 new cases on the Cape and Islands.

The state’s 14-day positivity rate was 6.44%. The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 9.74%, and 5.33% for Dukes and Nantucket counties.     

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 21 patients with coronavirus, one in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported 11 patients, none in the ICU. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital had no patients. Nantucket Cottage Hospital had one patient being treated for coronavirus, none in the ICU. 

State health officials said Thursday there were 86 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 20,545 since the pandemic began.      

There were 14 deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths from probable cases is 1,478 in Massachusetts.     

Barnstable County posted four new deaths, the state agency reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 666 in Barnstable County. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 22 since the pandemic began in March 2020.        

The two-week COVID-19 case count, total case count and 14-day testing positivity rate for Cape Cod towns follows:         

Barnstable (108; 11,612; 9.06%); Bourne (49; 4,294; 9.46%); Brewster (19; 1,765; 6.22%); Chatham (10; 1,065; 10.6%); Dennis (50; 2,843; 12.93%); Eastham (14; 627; 10.13%); Falmouth (94; 5,658; 10.75%); Harwich (32; 2,534; 11.01%); Mashpee (32; 3,144; 7.66%); Orleans (19; 970; 10.29%): Provincetown (six; 491; 10.14%); Sandwich (52; 4,289; 9.98%); Truro (less than five; 209; 7.69%); Wellfleet (less than five; 333; 3.13%) and Yarmouth (68; 5,522; 10.4%).
