Steve Xiarhos to run for re-election for 5th Barnstable seat
State Rep. Steven Xiarhos, R-Barnstable, has announced he will run for re-election.
There are no other candidates on the ballot but the deadline for candidates to return nomination papers to their town clerks is May 3. The general election is Nov. 8.
Xiarhos was first elected on Nov. 3, 2020 and is serving his first term, having been sworn in on Jan. 6, 2021.
The recent redistricting of the 5th Barnstable District includes the whole town of Sandwich, as well as precincts in Bourne (1, 2, 3, 5A, 7) and Barnstable (10, 11, 12), according to the Secretary of the State website.
Xiarhos made the announcement at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa in Hyannis, where he was hosting a reception with Scott Brown, former U.S. ambassador to New Zealand, according to a press release.
Xiarhos is a former deputy chief of police in Yarmouth and spent years defending public safety and “qualified immunity” for first responders, according to the release.

He also helped get “Nero’s Law” passed, a bill that allows police K9’s to be taken by ambulance if they are injured while on duty. Nero’s Law resulted from an incident in 2018 when Yarmouth Police K9 Sgt. Sean Gannon was killed in the line of duty, and the police dog, Nero, was badly injured.
Xiarhos also created Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen, an annual motorcycle ride for charity across the Cape.
Xiarhos is a ranking minority member on the Joint Committee of Veterans and Federal Affairs, ranking minority member on the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight, a member of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security and the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs.
