Trump and 2,000 National Guard troops carrying M17 pistols and M4 rifles have turned Washington, D.C. into a militarized zone.¹ Trump’s armed soldiers patrol major intersections and city streets, striking fear into communities across D.C. and turning low level arrests into draconian federal charges.²

As Trump intensifies his forced takeover of the D.C. police, his sycophants in Congress want to make Trump’s command indefinite “until order is restored.”³ This is straight out of the authoritarian playbook.

And now, Trump is threatening to deploy troops to Chicago — another escalation in the White House’s war on cities. Congress must take real action to end this administration’s nightmarish military takeover.

Trump sycophant Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who’s pushing the measure to hand Trump full power over D.C. police, said, "Our resolution is straightforward: if the President determines that continued federal control is necessary to keep D.C. safe, he should have the authority to do so."⁴

Giving Trump this authority would crumble the rule of law, embolden him to militarize whatever parts of the country he wants, and allow him to continue targeting Democratic politicians and cities that he wants to terrorize.

First, Trump sent troops to Los Angeles to crush protests in response to his cruel mass deportations. Now, the White House has brought its fear and violence to D.C. for weeks. Trump threatens that Chicago could be next, and so could every city in America. Stephen Miller, Pam Bondi, Pete Hegseth and Trump himself could show up anywhere with soldiers behind them to impose their authoritarian will on the American people. Congress must take a stand, and quickly, to stop Trump’s creeping dictatorship.
