The Key Bridge was a steel truss bridge that had three center spans held up by piers. Engineering experts told 11 News they question why the bridge piers were built so close to the shipping channel. Experts said the bridge piers were not built to handle the type of impactful force and that bumpers would have helped.

The entire 22-member crew of the cargo ship that collided with the Baltimore Bridge were Indians. The Singapore-flagged container ship struck a bridge pylon on the Patapsco River. All crew members, including two pilots, escaped injury. The ship was en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, causing several vehicles to fall into the chilly waters. Witnesses reported seeing vehicles on the bridge as it collapsed and the ship caught fire. US officials ruled out terrorist involvement, citing a loss of propulsion in a US intelligence report. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, vital for Baltimore Harbor crossings, handles 31,000 cars daily. Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency to expedite resource mobilization amid the crisis.
