What I'm hearing: Scenes from the campaign trail

Hi, it's Chesa Boudin.

For the last few weeks, I’ve spent every day out in the neighborhoods of San Francisco, talking face-to-face with the people who make our city great.

The overwhelming takeaway from these conversations has been clear: The recall effort doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

Again and again, when we talk to folks about the issues we’re facing and how to move forward, they oppose the recall.

Let me give you some examples:

On a merchant walk in the Excelsior, I spoke with a woman who said, in Spanish, that she planned to send in her vote for the recall, but her ballot was still on her kitchen table. She was upset about the closing of her local Walgreens and blamed it on me. After a few minutes of discussing that this was a broader corporate strategy (Walgreens announced a plan to close 200 stores back in 2019) and our work on addressing organized retail crime, and expanding victim services to include property crimes she said, “I am going to go rip up that ballot and vote in person AGAINST the recall.”

Recently I called an undecided voter who is Chinese American. He expressed his concern over rising hate against the Asian American community. I shared our work to expand victim services for Chinese speakers and prosecute hate crimes, as well as the broad coalition of Chinese leaders and organizations standing with us. After our call, he said, “I am voting for you, and I am getting my whole family to vote for you.”

On another occasion, I was on the phone with a merchant in the Tenderloin. While he had told us he was undecided, it sounded like he was in support of the recall and had bought into the scapegoating of me and my office for all problems big and small. We went over our work to address drug dealing and the issues facing small business owners. He not only said he would vote for me but offered to host an event and reach out to other business owners so they could hear directly from me.

There are too many people in San Francisco for me to talk with each person one-on-one, so I need your help to reach folks across our city at scale. And with voter turnout at a historic low, every vote truly counts. Please join us by making a donation right now to help my campaign finish strong.

Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers  want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.

Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
