Gov. Hochul's chief judge pick rejected by her own party in stunning defeat
Despite loud opposition from her own party, New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul has stubbornly tried to push through the nomination of her anti-choice, anti-union, anti-due process, conservative Supreme Court Justice pick, Hector LaSalle — who somehow also enjoys the support of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Hochul was dealt a historic rebuke when all but two members of the state Senate Judiciary Committee voted against LaSalle's ill-fated nomination.

Outcry grows after Ron DeSantis rejects AP African-American Studies course for Florida students
Gov. DeSantis' white supremacist culture war against Black Americans — and reality itself — reached fever pitch this week when the Florida Dept. of Education rejected a national Advanced Placement African-American Studies course because it is “contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value.” Whitewashing history is just the latest act in DeSantis' radical war on education in Florida, where he has packed K-12 school districts with far-right extremists, pushed ridiculous but damaging book bans, passed the notorious “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and appointed right-wing zealots to the board of at least one liberal arts college.
George Santos competed as drag queen in Brazil, acquaintances say
A photograph of a drag queen named "Kitara" that bears a striking resemblance to a certain well-known Republican liar began circulating online this week. Freelance reporter and MSNBC columnist Marisa Kabas contacted an old acquaintance and fellow drag queen in Brazil, who confirmed the authenticity of the photograph and Santos' presence in it. Nice to know that Santos, who seemingly enjoyed freely expressing himself as a drag performer during his glory days in Rio, is now a card-carrying member of the virulently anti-LGBTQ GOP, helping deny basic rights to marginalized people as a member of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
Hunt on for alleged arsonist in Illinois Planned Parenthood clinic fire days after state enacted new abortion rights laws
A suspect in a white pickup truck with a red door is responsible for the latest attack on a reproductive healthcare clinic in Peoria, Illinois. A fire accelerant was thrown through a window, starting a blaze in a clinic room that injured one firefighter. If the assailant had done their research, they would know this clinic does not perform abortion services but instead provides critical reproductive and sexual healthcare to the community — but given the preposterous conspiracy theories that the right-wing regularly smears Planned Parenthood with, it likely would not have mattered.

Texas Republican files bill to label fetal remains in food
Folks, we regret to inform you that the Republican-dominated Texas legislature is back on its bullshit. The dignified and deeply serious deliberative body infamous for advancing bills mandating funerals for miscarried babies and permitting open carry swords (why not) is ratcheting up the crazy with a brand new hysteria campaign — to compel all companies to clearly label "human fetal tissue" in their food and medicine products. It probably goes without saying, but just to be safe — this isn't actually a thing. It's just good, old-fashioned demagoguery.
Utah man who killed his whole family faced 2020 abuse investigation
Once again, we are faced with the uncomfortable reality that when domestically abused women sound the alarm to authorities, their cries all too often go unheard. In this case, daughter Macie Haight detailed to police how her father assaulted her multiple times and explicitly told authorities she was “very afraid that he was going to keep her from breathing and kill her.” Police and prosecutors chose to do nothing. Two years later, Michael Haight fatally shot his wife, their five children, and then himself just two weeks after his wife finally filed for divorce. The link between domestic abuse and spousal murder is crystal clear; it is a reprehensible failure of public policy that such men are let off the hook and allowed to own deadly weapons.
Tesla video promoting self-driving was staged, engineer testifies
In what will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Elon Musk's highly touted "self-driving" Tesla video demonstration from 2016 did not actually feature a "self-driving car." An engineer testified that "when trying to show the Model X could park itself with no driver, a test car crashed into a fence in Tesla’s parking lot." The video is being used as evidence in a criminal lawsuit against Tesla for misrepresenting the capabilities of the autonomous driving feature on Teslas after several crashes, some fatal.
Jacinda Ardern resigns as prime minister of New Zealand
The world's youngest female head of government is calling it quits ahead of the October elections, admitting that she “no longer had enough in the tank” to continue serving her people. It's so important for leaders to be honest with themselves when they feel they're reaching their limits — even more so for heads of state. Ardern delivered a string of progressive victories during her tenure, extending parental leave to 26 weeks, increasing the national minimum wage, declaring a climate emergency, and guiding the island nation through COVID-19 pandemic relatively unscathed by global standards. She's earned herself a break.

Today’s Action: Register voters for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election in April!
Abortion rights are taking center stage once again, this time in Wisconsin, where progressive voters have a chance to flip control of the state Supreme Court and help restore a woman’s right to reproductive healthcare. Securing Democratic seats on the state’s high court could spell the end of the current, near-total abortion ban that’s been on the books since 1849. And since Republican gerrymandering in Wisconsin is some of the most egregious in the country, this may be our best chance at restoring reproductive rights for marginalized women currently being denied equitable access to care.
While progressives have managed to deliver a string of recent statewide abortion-rights victories in the wake of last summer’s disastrous SCTOUS ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, we must be steadfast in our pursuit to restore and preserve access to the millions of folks living in Republican-dominated red states. The battle for reproductive healthcare is raging, and we must stand ready to fight.
