Did you see the news? Last week the House and Senate approved THREE-QUARTERS-OF-A-TRILLION-DOLLARS for the Pentagon budget.
I’m disappointed in Congress. Especially in these difficult times of a global pandemic, climate crisis, and nationwide uprisings.
But I also have hope. Even though we lost this vote, this fight is far from over, and I know that I’m not alone in it. And that's because of more and more activists like you fighting for what we believe in, and because there are more and more members of Congress like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey who proposed and fought for a progressive amendment to cut the Pentagon budget by 10%.
So today, I hope you’ll celebrate that while we lost the vote, we ARE building momentum. Join me in writing Sens. Warren and Markey to say that we are paying attention, that we appreciate their work, and that we hope they keep doing everything they can to end bottomless Pentagon budgets.
Will you write Sens. Warren and Markey today to say thank you for voting to cut the Pentagon budget?
Even though in the end the House failed to pass the amendment,
93 Representatives and 32 Senators voted FOR the amendments to cut the Pentagon budget by 10%.
That’s not insignificant. In fact, just a few years ago this level of congressional support would have been UNTHINKABLE.
That’s why we have to think of the long game here.
Because luckily, next year, the country — WE — will have the opportunity to fundamentally reform U.S. security spending for the first time in nearly a decade. That’s because the budget caps put in place by the Budget Control Act of 2011 will come to an end and Congress will have a real debate about budget priorities.
That means this coming year’s activism is critically important.
What’s more? At the same time that progressive legislators are demanding votes to cut the Pentagon budget, Senate Republicans want to give the Pentagon EVEN MORE money. Their latest COVID-19 stimulus package proposes giving more funding to the Department of Defense — for F-35 fighter jets at that! And if we don’t follow up with members of Congress on how they vote, we’ll continue to see egregious proposals like this one, and many more.
That means we need to hold members of Congress to account who voted against the Pentagon budget cut. But it also means we need to celebrate the members of Congress who ARE reining in the bloated Pentagon budget for doing the right thing.
And that’s why it’s more important than ever that we reach out to Congress today. To ask Sens. Warren and Markey to keep up the good work in the days ahead!
Will you write and thank Sens. Warren and Markey?
Every year, we gain more champions in Congress, more progressive partners, and more activists, joining together to get loud and make one thing very clear: the era of limitless Pentagon funding and endless war is coming to an end. Last week, we lost a vote. But in the long game, we’re winning.
Because if we keep up this momentum — change is coming.
Thank you for working for peace,
Erica, Michael, Tara, and the Win Without War team
