This election is hugely important for so many reasons, but at the top of the list is the fact that it will determine the future of voting rights in America.
This weekend, we lost my friend and colleague, Georgia’s Congressman John Lewis, the “conscience of Congress” and a man who fought and bled for voting rights for his entire life, from being beaten nearly to death while marching over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama to fighting for the Voting Rights Act in Congress.
John’s fight has to go on, because it has been the work of our nation to build a more perfect union, starting with protecting and ensuring the right to vote.
The results of the election in November will determine whether we can reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2013. The House passed legislation to do so last year, but no surprise, that bill has been sitting in the legislative graveyard that is Mitch McConnell’s Senate.
This November, Georgia has the opportunity to elect another champion of civil rights and progressive values, someone who will fight the good fight and bring moral leadership to the Senate. That person is Reverend Raphael Warnock.
Rev. Warnock is the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, the same church where Martin Luther King Jr. served as co-pastor with his father Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. Growing up in public housing with eleven siblings, Rev. Warnock understands firsthand the struggles of our most vulnerable, and he’s since devoted his life to raising people up and fighting for change, like Medicaid expansion, voter registration, and action on climate change.
Today, Rev. Warnock is running against Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler, who you may know as the Senator who reportedly dumped $20 million worth of stock after receiving private information about the coronavirus pandemic, while simultaneously downplaying it to the public last winter. She has the backing of Mitch McConnell and his massive network of right-wing donors, so Rev. Warnock is counting on grassroots donations from people like you to help him win this November.
Rev. Warnock is the change that Georgia and our country need, and by electing him, we can elect a passionate moral leader while helping flip the Senate. Support us today by splitting a contribution of $10 or more to our people-powered campaigns.
Thank you for keeping up this fight for our country,
Adam
