National Wildlife Federation Action Fund: Reminder: Mule deer need your help, speak out by April 18th!

Did you see our message about mule deer and how large-scale solar on public lands must be built in such a way to minimize negative impacts to deer and other wildlife? There’re only four days left to let the Biden Administration know that you want to see solar energy developed in a way that safeguards our wildlife populations. Can mule deer count on you?

We all know that we need to transition to cleaner energy sources, which means developing renewable energy on public lands. But let’s make sure to do it in a way that minimizes harm to wildlife who depend on these lands for survival. Thank you for speaking out today!

Mule deer

We all know that our nation needs to quickly transition to renewable energy sources and that public lands will play a role in meeting clean energy goals. But we must ensure that proposed solar energy projects do not threaten wildlife or destroy critical habitat.

Mule deer, for example, travel long distances as seasons change to find food, seek shelter from harsh conditions, and safely give birth to their young. Large-scale solar development requires vast amounts of land and is almost always surrounded by impermeable fencing that fragments these migration routes—and can also cause injury or death when deer try to leap over them.

The Biden Administration has released a new proposal for utility-scale solar development on public lands to be located where it will have the least impact on wildlife and other resources and, requiring developers to mitigate negative effects of projects.

Please send a comment in support of solar development done in a way that limits harmful impacts to wildlife.

Mule deer are likely to be impacted by poorly placed solar facilities because migration pathways can be blocked by large-scale fencing around solar installations. Such facilities can severely limit their ability to migrate for food, mating, and survival. The Bureau of Land Management proposes to require and incentivize developers to build projects with wildlife in mind.

Please let the Biden Administration know that you want to see solar energy developed in a way that safeguards our wildlife populations.

Public lands are crucial for the survival of wildlife. We can incentivize solar energy companies to build on brownfields, previously disturbed areas, away from important wildlife habitat and migration corridors, and near transmission lines to minimize added impacts.

Our nation must be smart-from-the-start as we continue our transition to renewable energy. We owe it to future generations to learn from the mistakes that were made leasing public lands for oil and gas development and mining. We must ensure siting and mitigation are informed and effective.

Let the Biden Administration know that you support solar development on public lands but it must be done in a way to avoid negative wildlife impacts as much as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to speak out for wildlife and their vital habitat.
