Telegram homeschooling group outed as a resource for neo-Nazis who want to teach their kids hate at home
Logan and Katja Lawrence of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, operating under the names "Mr. and Mrs. Saxon," launched The Dissident Homeschool channel on Telegram in late 2021 after years of searching for and developing “Nazi-approved material” for their own home-schooled children. The channel — which now has nearly 2,500 subscribers — is replete with far-right, hate-fueled material, including ready-made lesson plans authored by the Saxons on various subjects, like Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee (a “grand role model for young, white men”) and Martin Luther King Jr. (“the antithesis of our civilization and our people”). Lovely!

In a laughable, deeply condescending appearance on CBS' Face the Nation, House Speaker and Big Lie apologist Kevin McCarthy put on an incomprehensible display of whataboutism, repeatedly dodging straightforward questions about George Santos and election denialism, clumsily blurting out word salad talking points apparently designed to appease his Republican clown caucus.

GOP national sales tax talk backfires, as Democrats see political gold
The Republican Party's ongoing war on the 99% was back in the headlines last week as members of the House GOP's far-right clown caucus floated legislation to replace income tax with a 30% (!!!) federal sales tax and abolish the IRS. Various forms of the legislation, hilariously dubbed the “FairTax Act,” have been around for decades and attracted little serious attention, but in the wake of historic concessions made by Kevin McCarthy to extreme-right members of his own party, the newly elected House speaker has no choice but to push the bill through the committee process where Democrats stand ready to pounce.

Far-right project that pushed election lies expands mission as Trump ramps up 2024 campaign
ReAwaken America, a project of Oklahoma-based entrepreneur and right-wing extremist Clay Clark, helped spread Trump’s bogus claims about voting fraud in 2020 and deadly misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. Clark is trying to expand the organization's mission, while facing new criticism from scholars and religious leaders about its incendiary political and Christian nationalist messages.

Human teenagers apparently less patient than chimpanzee teenagers, according to new study
Researchers worked with 40 chimpanzees at a sanctuary in the Republic of Congo, playing games that tested the adolescent animals’ orientation toward risk-taking and impulsivity and determined that, while both species face many of the same challenges growing up, human teens tend to be more impulsive, risk-seeking, and less able to regulate emotions than their chimp counterparts. The study made no mention of chronic eye-rolling habits, acute aversion to "dad" jokes, or preoccupation with bodily function humor, for some reason.

Half Moon Bay massacre was prompted by a $100 repair bill for damaged forklift, local prosecutor says
A farmworker charged with killing seven people at two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms in California reportedly told investigators he was spurred to carry out the shootings after his supervisor demanded he pay $100 to repair a forklift damaged at work. Chunli Zhao, 66, who openly admitted to the killings in a courthouse interview, told a local TV news reporter he was bullied and worked long hours on the farms and his complaints were ignored.
Minnesota becomes first state to pass bill enshrining abortion rights post-Dobbs
After more than 14 hours of debate, the Minnesota Senate passed a bill on Saturday establishing a “fundamental right” to abortion in the state. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz indicated he will sign the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act into law, making Minnesota the first state to pass such a law guaranteeing the right to abortion in the wake of the SCOTUS' disastrous Dobbs decision last summer.

Former New Jersey Gov. and accomplished loser in his own right Chris Christie blasted any possibility of Trump returning to the White House, insisting the disgraced ex-president simply “can’t win a general election," pointing to his track record of backing astoundingly bad, losing candidates in otherwise winnable races throughout the country.

Today’s Action: Tell Congress to deliver federal LGBTQ+ protections!
Despite Democrats’ best effort to pass the Equality Act last congressional session, our elected officials have yet to deliver wide-reaching protections for LGBTQ+ people. With the onslaught of laws targeting LGBTQ+ freedoms, targeted mass shootings, and the deeply troubling, consistent rise in hate crimes, we simply can’t wait any longer to secure protections for our marginalized communities.
The ability to persecute others is not something that makes America “free.” What is important is the ability for all, regardless of identity, to live an equitable life. We have a very long way to go towards achieving that goal. The fact is, conservatives have been scapegoating and persecuting the oppressed for centuries — and doing so under the guise of religious freedom.
We must not allow protections for the LGBTQ+ community to fall by the wayside. Whether by reviving the Equality Act or putting forth new legislation, we must act swiftly. Every second Congress waits puts another person at risk.
