Lebon believed "that swaying a crowd didn't require telling the truth, but rather telling the crowd what they wanted to hear, and appealing to the crowds emotions".
As Lebon put it, " the masses have never thirsted for the truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to defy error, if error seduces them" He also said "whoever can supply them with an illusionist easily becomes their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim".
He believed that to gain power in mass politics, you would have to "simplify your political ideas, win over a crowd, of like minded people, that would express support for them. The best way to do that was not to be concerned with truth, but rather emotional charge your ideas and get the crowd excited. To tell them illusions that they want to hear".
These are the core assumptions behind fascism!
