I am fed up with my kids worrying whether they are safe in Irvine public schools. You know why they worry? Because they might not be. Just a few weeks ago, we had a shooting nearby in Laguna Woods.
I am fed up with Republicans in Washington who, behind closed doors, admit that we must do something about gun violence. But when the time comes to act, they are shills for the gun lobby.
Yesterday I was proud to call out special interest groups’ bullshit in an Oversight Committee hearing. Conservative groups are lying to the American people to keep us from passing legislation to prevent gun violence.
70% of Americans support common sense solutions to gun violence. That’s why the House just passed legislation to raise the minimum age to purchase semi automatic weapons, ban high-capacity magazines, and regulate ghost guns.
There are solutions to gun violence. But there is an entire lobby working to stop gun violence prevention. Our children, our communities, and our places of worship are the ones who bear the devastating and deadly consequences.
The duty of the government is to keep its people safe, and when romaine lettuce or treadmills cause harm—the government recalls and regulates them. But as thousands of people die because of gun violence, we literally allow gun manufacturers to get away with murder.
