Today’s Action: Put an end to ICE detention centers!
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers have increasingly become breeding grounds for appalling, inhumane treatment of detainees. Immigrants and asylum seekers have been unable to see loved ones for almost two years following the implementation of strict COVID protocols. ICE is exacting grave injustices, including family separations, involuntary hysterectomies, and laughably inadequate COVID-19 safety measures, without consequence. An internal watchdog from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General even released a report in late 2021 detailing improper use of solitary confinement. Despite this, ICE detention centers continue to operate unabated.
Call (202-456-1111) or write President Biden and tell him to put an end to ICE detention centers!
Not only do ICE detention centers fail to comply with their own standards for using solitary confinement, the report also describes the destruction of documents related to its use. It’s clear there is a deeper issue of transparency, and it isn’t the first time bad behavior at the troubled agency has been flagged. In one particularly abhorrent incident, an ICE officer downplaying the atrocious "living" conditions in a facility in New Jersey callously told a detainee, "Well, you’re going to have to die of something."
Despite ICE’s policies that recognize solitary confinement as a last resort, the watchdog report reveals extreme abuse of the tactic, particularly in cases involving detainees with vulnerabilities (such as those suffering from mental illness). Unsurprisingly, this abuse has led to a severe uptick in suicides within ICE facilities.
