CEASEFIRE

Millions of people are suffering and scared.

This weekend, Israeli military strikes killed 93 people sheltering at a mosque and school.[1] As more evacuation orders are issued, it is terrifyingly clear there is nowhere safe to flee. The World Health Organization just added polio to the list of deadly diseases tearing through the strip. Public health experts estimate that, even if the war ended today, the death toll would climb to upwards of 186,000[2], and it will take decades to rebuild.[3] But the possibility the situation will deteriorate even further is terrifyingly high — as we await an Iranian government response to recent Israeli military strikes, hawks in Congress are circling.[4]

In the past ten months, bloodshed has swept across Israel and Palestine to Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Iran. The violence shows no signs of stopping, but the thing is, for seven critical days, it did.

The November ceasefire saved lives. Hostages returned to their families. Hundreds of trucks were able to bring crucially needed aid into Gaza. Violence across the region slowed dramatically.

We need to get back to a ceasefire immediately.

There are no military solutions to this crisis, so our team is working overtime to urge restraint and call for diplomacy. It looks like steadfastly pushing the U.S. government to use its influence for peace while furiously pulling DC’s armchair generals back from misguided actions that could tip the region into a more devastating regional war. Just one of these efforts requires our focus full-time, but with lives on the line we need to dig deeper and go further. That’s why we’re reaching out:

For every one of the past 310 days, Win Without War has been laser-focused on our demand for a ceasefire that can return the remaining hostages home and save lives in Israel, Gaza, and beyond.

We’ve mobilized tens of thousands of activists to join us in speaking out for a ceasefire. We’ve been in constant conversation with movement partners — political parties, unions, and more — to encourage anyone who cares about peace to work on this issue with us. We blanketed DC in posters so that no one could avoid our demands. We honored the human toll of this war with a temporary memorial on the National Mall. We’ve circled the U.S. Capitol and White House with messages for peace on dozens of mobile billboards. We’ve held and attended countless meetings with members of Congress and other key decision-makers to ensure any calls for war are met with resounding and sustained appeals for peace.

Because of that work and the work of partners across the movement activists, celebrities, public officials, academics, nearly 100 members of Congress, President Biden, VP Harris, and more have joined in. But there’s still more that needs to be done.

Another round of ceasefire negotiations is reportedly set to begin on August 15.[5] That means we have just a few precious days to push the U.S. government to use every ounce of influence it has to end the violence. It requires a round-the-clock effort, and we need everyone who can, to join in now.

Everything we do — the grassroots mobilization, the relentless lobbying, the creative campaign tactics, and more — is only possible because of people like you.

As the crisis continues the despair is only getting deeper, but the stakes are only getting higher. Together, we not only reckon with so much pain and suffering — we continue to build something better from it: A world where we can all live and thrive without the threat of violence.

We’re so grateful for the ways, big and small, you join us in this urgent effort every day.

Thank you for working for peace,
