There’s an international labor alliance brewing in Texas -- and they’re taking on one of the biggest, most ruthless oil corporations in the United States. In West Texas oil fields, independent truckers cart special sand, an essential component of Big Oil’s energy production operations. But because these truckers are independent owner-operators, they’re at the mercy of operators like Halliburton, who force truckers to wait in line for hours, idling trucks in the hot sun without pay or access to bathrooms. In some cases, truckers are forced to wait for more than 30 hours! |
Here’s the thing: Halliburton owns the fracking operations, and they call in truckers to move essential components. But they don’t start paying the truckers when they arrive at the job site -- pay doesn’t start until the truck has been loaded. So if Halliburton doesn’t have its loads ready at the time that they told the truckers to show up, the truckers have no choice but to wait around or lose the whole fare, or risk not getting the call for the next job. These pickups and drop offs are in the most brutal parts of Texas. They don’t have indoor waiting rooms. Truckers are forced to wait in the cabs of their trucks, with their engines running -- burning diesel that pollutes the air AND costs the drivers money, which they of course aren’t compensated for at all. The Justice for Truckers movement is organizing drivers in Texas and Mexico, putting pressure on the corporate greed that leaves drivers helpless. In solidarity, Faiz Shakir, Co-Founder
