LA Times: How Chesa Boudin’s life made him a lightning rod for the progressive movement
If you haven’t already, I hope you have a chance to read this profile of me and our movement in the L.A. Times.
The story highlights my relationship with Lorenzo, a childhood friend of mine who I became friends with during our monthly visits to our respective mothers in prison. We lost touch, but in my first year of college, I received a letter from my father -- he had met Lorenzo on his cell block. Doing time for burglary.
For Lorenzo, the odds played out.
I’ve seen (and lived) firsthand what incarceration can do to the children of those affected -- that’s what drew me to law school, a job as a public defender in San Francisco, and a it’s what led me to run for District Attorney and my promises to use incarceration as a last resort, tackle systemic inequities, and prosecute police brutality.
Within days of me being sworn in, my opponents registered the domain name: recallchesaboudin.org. They’ve spent millions -- mostly from anonymous and out-of-state Republican donors -- to take me out and stop our movement.
Let me be as clear as I can: I will never let out-of-state billionaires or the threat of a recall deter me from carrying out what you elected me to do in 2019:
✅ Tackling gun violence at its source -- especially by cracking down on untraceable "Ghost Guns"
✅ Supporting and expanding services to victims of crime
✅ Safely reducing the jail population and protecting public health
✅ Fighting racism in policing and holding cops accountable
Our efforts are working, but the recall election is rapidly approaching, and I need your help to keep this movement alive. So I have to ask: Will you donate $25 or more to help me fight back against the recall right now?
I need you with me if we're going to defeat the recall.
Thanks for your support,
Chesa Boudin District Attorney, San Francisco
P.S. Please share this article with your friends and networks!
Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.
Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
