NEW BEDFORD — Bristol County voters know the name of their sheriff, according to a report released Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts; that puts them ahead of most in the state.

Released as part of the organization's new "Know Your Sheriff" campaign, the poll found that 52% of registered voters in Bristol County could correctly name their sheriff: Thomas M. Hodgson.

Statewide, only 17% were able to answer correctly when asked to name their county sheriff.

“It’s time for Massachusetts to get to know our sheriffs,” said Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts. “From increasing treatment options for mental health and substance use to rejecting policies that split families apart, these elected officials can set and carry out policies that make our communities safe and just for all.

"The civil rights and civil liberties of Bay Staters are at stake in these elections.”

The ACLU said the campaign is a non-partisan effort to educate voters on a sheriff's role in state governance and thus increase participation in sheriff's elections.

"Information is power in the hands of voters," Rose said.

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson is seen at Fall River's inauguration on Monday, Jan. 3, at B.M.C. Durfee High School.

According to the organization, 500,000 Massachusetts voters went to the polls during the last sheriff's election in 2016, but did not vote for a sheriff.

Beacon Research, the company which conducted the poll between Jan. 14 and 24, surveyed 970 registered Mass. voters.

The survey also found that 65% of voters viewed mental health, drug treatment, and emotional support services as top priorities in dealing with incarcerated populations. Only 47% viewed punishment as a top priority.
