At the Postal Service, Trump put a fox in charge of the hen house

As our country continues to see record new COVID-19 cases, with our total just surpassing the 5 million mark, we’re going to be relying on the U.S. Postal Service like never before. During a pandemic, postal deliveries can be life saving, like medicine from the VA for our veterans.

An effective postal service is also the key to safe, secure voting, yet it’s currently struggling financially and experiencing damaging delays after being underfunded and purposely sabotaged by the Trump administration.

Naturally, Trump put one of his biggest campaign donors in charge of the USPS, who has millions worth of stock in private delivery companies. It’s like putting a fox in charge of the hen house.

Trump has always talked about privatizing the Postal Service, and now with his re-election on the line, he’s purposely neglecting this public service while misleading voters about the safety and security of mail-in ballots. He’s admitted it himself: He fears that the more people vote, the more likely he and Republicans will lose.

USPS service and delivery are already facing delays and staffing shortages in the midst of this unprecedented pandemic, and Trump’s handpicked postmaster general is only making it worse by eliminating overtime for postal workers, instructing mail carriers to hold mail until the next day, and either firing or undermining dozens of Postal Service officials.

We can’t afford to let the Postal Service collapse, especially less than three months out from an election when millions will vote by mail.

Simply put, we have to save the U.S. Postal Service. Our democracy depends on it.
