Nutmeg Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation
In prep of the high winds expected for tomorrow, rehabbers across the state are expecting a number of calls regarding baby squirrels (and other animals) when nests are potentially blown from trees. Here is some helpful information should you need it.
Unless the squirrel is injured, it was in a pet’s mouth (it will need antibiotics), the mother is confirmed dead, or it is covered with insects (or their eggs or larvae), PLEASE try to reunite the baby squirrel with its mother -- she raises them best.
If you find a baby squirrel, pick it up and examine it. If it feels cool, but appears otherwise healthy, warm it up. Place an old T-shirt (not a towel) in a small box (a shoe box is fine) with air holes in the lid. Place half the box on a heating pad set on low. Or fill a bottle with warm water, wrap it in another T-shirt and place it in the box. DO NOT offer it anything by mouth, including water.
When the baby is warm and the weather has cleared, place the open box at the base of the tree from which it fell. Play this squirrel distress call (https://youtu.be/rxr53i2lI8s). Go inside and monitor the situation from a window. Chances are, the mother will return to collect her offspring.
If it is getting dark and mom has not returned, bring them inside and give us, or another rehabilitator a call.
