JD Vance lies and moderators do nothing

Courier

To the untrained eye (say, the eye of an undecided voter in a swing state), Tuesday’s Vice Presidential debate might have looked like a return to normal. Two “Midwest Nice” candidates discussing policy and setting aside the Trumpian personal attacks.

Needless to say, the legacy media ate it up.

Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, is not the earnest Midwest moderate he pretended to be last night.

Since embracing the MAGA movement to win Trump’s endorsement in the Ohio Senate race, he’s been a champion for Project 2025 and its far-right, Christian nationalist blueprint to overhaul the federal government.

Vance supports a federal abortion ban, demonizes the LGBTQ+ community, and was responsible for the viral, totally false story about immigrants eating pets in his home state of Ohio.

But on Tuesday, without CBS moderators holding him to account, Vance wasn’t challenged on any of this.

Instead, he used the debate as a stage to rebrand himself as an aw-shucks moderate.

Most notably, he falsely positioned himself—and by extension, the Republican Party—as pro-choice, despite his vocal support for a national abortion ban and previously comparing abortion to slavery.

And here’s the point: When the legacy media fails to hold figures like Vance accountable, it misleads the public into believing they’re seeing a “balanced” perspective. The result? Voters walk away with a distorted view, thinking candidates like Vance are moderate when they’re anything but.

At COURIER, we refuse to play along with the fiction that Donald Trump and JD Vance represent “normal” politics. They threaten the foundations of our democracy, and we won’t shy away from calling that out in our news coverage—every single day—between now and Election Day in the swing states and communities that will decide this election.

As Election Day approaches, our battleground news coverage is more critical than ever. Can you chip in $7.00 now to support our work?
