In Episode 6 of my fallacy-busting constitutional law class, I cover our most requested topic to explain that a Republic is just a representative democracy, not a form of authoritarianism . . . Open to watch the full episode!

I just wrapped up a thrilling 27-state tour for Democrats in critical races across America, and everywhere I traveled, from California to North Carolina to Texas to Nevada to Pennsylvania to Maine, I received an overwhelming response from true-blue friends who are tuning in to my free constitutional law class, Class with Jamie Raskin: Ten Constitutional Fallacies and Fever Dreams of the MAGA Right, hosted by podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen.

Now, with just one week left until Election Day, we bring you our most highly requested episode yet.

In our sixth class, I debunk the MAGA fallacy that “America isn’t a democracy because we are a Republic,” as if these are opposing and contradictory forms of government. As you know, Republicans deliver that line to justify voter suppression tactics, gerrymandering and different kinds of political disenfranchisement and tyranny.

But a Republic is just a representative democracy.

MAGA Republicans love to concoct arguments for attacking democracy and what Thomas Jefferson called “the consent of the governed.” The MAGA Supreme Court has upheld gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics while aggressively dismantling the Voting Rights Act.

But here’s the good news: as I’ve traveled across America in this campaign, I’ve seen a huge popular majority forming for the party of strong democracy and freedom. So while the GOP fights to entrench America in their matrix of democracy repression, we’re fighting to keep the project of democracy moving forward.

This is a pivotal moment in American history, Frank, and I am grateful to have you by my side.

With solidarity for the battles ahead,

Jamie Raskin

P.S. The struggle for strong American democracy is an unfinished project. In 2024, we must not only defend American political institutions but keep the engines of democracy humming to pass statehood for disenfranchised populations, to end gerrymandering and corporate-financed elections, and to adopt Ranked Choice Voting in federal elections. If you’re on the side of strong democracy and freedom, please help us fund a massive surge of energy for true-blue Democrats up and down the ballot by making a generous contribution today.
