Yesterday, the Biden administration announced that after years of negotiations, American Airlines flight attendants have reached a tentative agreement that provides workers with the wages and dignity they deserve, and that averts a strike, which would have been devastating to airline passengers and our economy. Next up? Delta! Delta Airlines is the only major American airline with mostly non-union employees. But that could be about to change. Delta’s baggage handlers, also known as ramp agents, could be on the cusp of forming a union for the first time. But they’re up against Delta’s union busting that includes anti-union videos and leaflets in break rooms, meetings with new hires that discourage unionization, managers telling workers to remove their union pins, and taking union fliers from workers’ personal belongings. Delta even has an anti-union website with false and misleading information.
Flex McGhee is a ramp agent who has been working at Delta for 24 years. He told us:
Pat Gores, another Delta ramp agent, told More Perfect Union:
Without a union, Delta employees have faced declining conditions, including a time off and sick leave policy that wears them down. Workers currently get only 7 personal days per year. If they get sick or injured for longer than that, workers have to either use vacation days or go on short-term disability, during which 40% of their normal salary is withheld. Together, we’re fighting for the rights and wages of workers everywhere. In solidarity, -Faiz Faiz Shakir, Co-Founder
