Ever since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, corporations have been allowed to spend unlimited and undisclosed amounts of money to influence American elections. This dark money allows the wealthy few to drown out the voices of everyday Americans, especially those with the least wealth — Black, brown, young, and new Americans. Fortunately, there’s a bill in the Senate right now — the DISCLOSE Act — that would enforce greater transparency and accountability for dark money spending in our elections. Can you take a few minutes to call your senators and tell them to support this bill and get dark money out of our elections? No matter our color, party, or zip code, we deserve an equal say in the decisions that shape our future. The Senate has the opportunity to take a major step toward this goal by passing the DISCLOSE Act and ending the dominance of dark money in our elections. The DISCLOSE Act would: - Make it illegal to use a corporation to conceal an election contribution or donation by a foreign national
- Prohibit foreign nationals from contributing to ballot initiative and referendum campaigns
- Require the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to conduct an audit after each federal election cycle to see how much illicit foreign money was donated during that cycle
- And require dark money groups to disclose donors who gave more than $10,000 in an election cycle
But the Senate will go on recess soon — and if they don’t pass this bill by then, we might miss our chance to get this bill passed before the next election. In order to make progress on health care, racial justice, reproductive rights, environmental justice, or anything else we care about, we must stop dark money from influencing the outcomes of our elections. Call your senators today: Urge them to support the DISCLOSE Act and get it passed in the Senate as soon as possible. Thanks for making your voice heard, Christine Public Citizen |
