Call your senators: Tell them to expose dark money right away

Your senators are planning to leave Washington, DC for their August recess at the end of the week.

But they still haven’t voted on the DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would get secret money spending out of our elections!

We can’t let the Senate skip town without voting on this critical piece of legislation. If they don’t vote this week, we might lose our best shot in years to expose dark money.

Please take a few minutes to call your senators and urge them to pass the DISCLOSE Act.

Even if you’ve called before, we need your help again — the more messages your senators receive, the more pressure they feel to do the right thing.

Thanks,
Christine

P.S. If you didn’t see it, I’ve included my previous email with more information about the DISCLOSE Act below.

Ever since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, corporations have been allowed to spend unlimited and undisclosed amounts of money to influence American elections.

This dark money allows the wealthy few to drown out the voices of everyday Americans, especially those with the least wealth Black, brown, young, and new Americans.

Fortunately, there’s a bill in the Senate right now — the DISCLOSE Act — that would enforce greater transparency and accountability for dark money spending in our elections.

Can you take a few minutes to call your senators and tell them to support this bill and get dark money out of our elections?

No matter our color, party, or zip code, we deserve an equal say in the decisions that shape our future.

The Senate has the opportunity to take a major step toward this goal by passing the DISCLOSE Act and ending the dominance of dark money in our elections.

The DISCLOSE Act would:

  • Make it illegal to use a corporation to conceal an election contribution or donation by a foreign national
  • Prohibit foreign nationals from contributing to ballot initiative and referendum campaigns
  • Require the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to conduct an audit after each federal election cycle to see how much illicit foreign money was donated during that cycle
  • And require dark money groups to disclose donors who gave more than $10,000 in an election cycle

But the Senate will go on recess soon — and if they don’t pass this bill by then, we might miss our chance to get this bill passed before the next election.

In order to make progress on health care, racial justice, reproductive rights, environmental justice, or anything else we care about, we must stop dark money from influencing the outcomes of our elections.

Call your senators today: Urge them to support the DISCLOSE Act and get it passed in the Senate as soon as possible.

Thanks for making your voice heard,

Christine
