Today’s Action: Tell Biden to set an expiration date for burning coal in his infrastructure plan!

President Biden was a welcomed presence at the G7 summit (which annually gathers leaders from the world’s top economies to discuss major global issues) after four years of Trump’s belligerent America-First philosophy. Specifically, Biden brought the United States back in line with a science-based climate change approach.

But there’s a major climate milestone G7 did not achieve (and Biden failed to provide strong leadership on): putting an expiration date on burning coal. Coal burning is one of the biggest global contributors to climate change...and without an end-goal in sight, we will continue to drive toward irreversible global damage, and in a weakened negotiating position for encouraging other countries to tackle their own coal emissions.

But Biden can somewhat correct his position now, by including a deadline in his infrastructure package.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand a domestic expiration date in the 2030’s on burning coal is included in the upcoming infrastructure package, as well as green energy job training for American coal workers!

Real talk: Biden may have held back from setting a G7 timeline on eliminating coal burning due to the fact that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), our toughest Democratic hold-out for the upcoming vote on Biden’s infrastructure package, represents our second-largest coal-producing state. (The largest, Wyoming, has two Republican Senators who will vote against Biden’s package no matter what.)

And we get it: families that depend on coal production to put food on the table need to have good answers about where their income will come from when coal production is shut down. This is why any infrastructure plan Democrats produce will need to proactively address green energy job replacement and training for coal workers as their jobs disappear.

We have the ability to take care of American workers at home and global citizens abroad at the same time, if our leaders just have the courage to actually do it.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand a deadline in the 2030’s for eliminating coal burning in the United States in the upcoming infrastructure package – and green energy job training for coal workers!

PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition to invest in clean transportation in the infrastructure plan, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
