Last night, Democrats met in Chicago, the great city where Abraham Lincoln was nominated in 1860 to save the Union from fanatical insurrectionists and where Franklin D. Roosevelt was renominated in 1940 to defeat fascist dictators on the march in Europe.
Now, in 2024, we are in a fight to defend our democracy and freedom against the Banana Republicans who have reduced Lincoln’s party to a dangerous cult of personality.
Everybody remembers the violence of January 6, but nobody should forget that the violence was a coercive tactic to get Vice President Pence to nullify and destroy the electoral voice of millions of Americans.
That’s why they were chanting “hang Mike Pence.”
Donald Trump, his Congressional enablers and the MAGA mob wanted Pence to claim the power to cancel out the electoral votes of millions of people in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada and Georgia.
It was a dangerous and dark day for constitutional democracy but, like Vice President Kamala Harris says, we’re not going back.
let’s put the days of MAGA election suppression and violent insurrection behind us.
When we say democracy is on the ballot, we mean that this is a referendum on whether we will have political democracy in the American future.
I am grateful for your solidarity and support through these strange and turbulent times, and I hope to see you on the campaign trail soon.
